The Early Childhood Program at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is celebrating a proud milestone after one of its schools received glowing recognition from the National Education Association (NEA) for its exceptional work with young learners.
The recognition came on Tuesday, October 14, when NEA Vice President Princess Moss visited the KCK Early Childhood Center, where she met with staff and students.
In an early morning meet-and-greet with staff, Vice President Moss had glowing remarks about the program and staff at the school. “I just want to say thank you. Thank you for all that you do,” shared Moss. “Know that your work is part of a larger priority, and that is to ensure that we provide a great public education to every student.”

There were plenty of reasons why Vice President Moss chose to visit KCKECC, and they all point to a school community on the rise. “As far as the great things happening in our building, we’re off to a great start,” said Principal Heather Turi.
“We conducted multiple home visits before school started to help build strong relationships from day one. We had Literacy Night in September with over 150 kids and families in attendance,” added Turi.

Principal Turi commended her team’s commitment to building strong relationships and effective routines throughout the first quarter, and believes it will only grow from there.
The highlight of Vice President Moss’s visit was a tour of the school, where she interacted with students, including reading a book to them. “There’s nothing I love more than to be in schools, to be with students and to meet the folks who help those students become the best that they can be.”

Later that morning, Vice President Moss visited the Kansas City Public Library’s West Branch where she learned about a reading program for high school students.
